If a word carries a number,
it needs a definition.

This industry runs on terms that sound precise and are not. Every word below is defined the way we use it, so a claim built on it can be checked rather than taken on trust.

[ FLEET SAFETY TERMS ]

Fleet safety, defined

The terms fleet safety teams look up most, each defined in full on its own page: what it means, how the technology works, and where it fits in a fleet safety program. Start with collision avoidance systems, driver monitoring and the AI dash cam, then follow the links to coaching, alerts and incident reporting.

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) is the group of electronic safety features built into a vehicle to help the driver avoid collisions. Using radar, cameras and other sensors, ADAS features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist warn the driver of hazards or act on the vehicle directly.

AI Dash Cam

An AI dash cam is a vehicle-mounted camera that runs artificial intelligence on the device to interpret what it sees in real time. Instead of only recording, it detects risks such as distraction, drowsiness or a closing gap to the vehicle ahead, alerts the driver in the cab, and saves the relevant events for review.

Collision Avoidance System

A collision avoidance system is vehicle safety technology that detects an impending collision and helps the driver avoid it or reduce its severity. Using sensors such as radar, cameras and AI, it warns the driver of hazards ahead and, in active systems, can brake or steer automatically when a crash looks imminent.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver's attention away from driving, whether it draws their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel or their mind off the task. Phone use, eating, reading and adjusting controls are common examples. Each one reduces the driver's ability to notice and respond to hazards.

Driver Alert System

A driver alert system is an in-vehicle safety system that warns drivers in real time when their attention or the driving situation creates elevated risk. It uses cameras and sensors to detect distraction, drowsiness or developing collision risk, then signals the driver with an audible or visual alert so they can correct in time.

Driver Behavior

Driver behavior is the set of intentional and unintentional actions a driver takes while operating a vehicle, from speed and following distance to attention, phone use and fatigue. In fleet safety, driver behavior is measured to identify collision risk, alert drivers in the moment and focus coaching where it has the most effect.

Driver Coaching

Driver coaching is the ongoing process of giving drivers specific feedback on how they drive so that risky behavior changes over time. In commercial fleets it combines real-time in-cab alerts, driver self-review and focused manager conversations, all grounded in recorded driving events rather than general reminders to drive safely.

Driver Monitoring System (DMS)

A driver monitoring system (DMS) is a camera-based safety system that watches the driver's face, eyes and head position to detect distraction and drowsiness. When attention drops long enough to create risk, it alerts the driver in real time, and it can record the event for later review or coaching.

Drowsy Driving

Drowsy driving is operating a vehicle while too sleepy to stay fully alert. Drowsiness slows reaction time, narrows attention and can lead to microsleeps, brief lapses in which the driver loses awareness without noticing. Unlike fatigue, it cannot be fixed by a short break. The only remedy is sleep.

Fleet Safety

Fleet safety is the set of policies, practices and technologies an organization uses to reduce collisions, injuries and costs across the vehicles it operates. A fleet safety program covers driver qualification, vehicle maintenance, compliance, in-cab technology, coaching and incident response, and measures whether each one is actually lowering risk.

Incident Reporting

Incident reporting is the process of documenting the facts, evidence and data related to a collision, injury or other safety event involving a vehicle or driver. In a fleet, incident reporting turns what happened on the road into a record that safety, claims and insurance teams can act on, starting with first notice of loss.
